Preparing for dog training

A puppy learns best when the environment is simple et predictableBefore their arrival, prepare a quiet sleeping area, a dining area, and a bathroom area.

  • R

    Home

Y-harness, leash/long leash, bowls, resting mat, chew toys, transport crate, training treats.

  • R

    routines

    3–4 short outings/day, 3 spaced-out meals, 3–5 mini-sessions of 1–3 min.

  • R

    Calm ≠ isolation

Place your rug where you live, but away from direct traffic.

The first 30 days (week by week)

  • 01

    Week 1 - Basics & Cleanliness

Teach him his name and a quick reminder on walks back and forth. Take him outside after every wake-up, playtime, or meal. Handle him calmly (paws, ears). Schedule a vet visit if one is needed.

  • 02

    Week 2 — First codes

Ask for "sit" before feeding time or going outside. Start with very short absences (1 to 2 minutes) and return calmly.

  • 03

    Week 3 — Self-monitoring

If your pet starts nipping, redirect them to a suitable toy. Make them wait 1 to 2 seconds before saying "OK". Incorporate short scent games to tire them out without overexciting them.

  • 04

    Week 4 — Stability & Generalization

Extend absences by 5 to 10 minutes. Take one or two short outings to quiet places to generalize learning.

Positive socialization (0–16 weeks… and beyond)

The goal is not to see everything but to positively associate new things (people, dogs, noises, surfaces, places).

  • Maltipoo breeding pictogram

    Golden Rule

Short, carefully selected, joyful exhibitions, then a break.

  • Stress signals

The dog freezes, yawns, turns away, goes down? We move away, reduce the intensity, we resume later.

    Unknown dogs

Prioritize calm and compatible encounters rather than quantity.

Reminder & useful orders

Start at home, without distractions, with very short sessions. Begin with the "come and go" game: each dog calls once, comes, you reward, then you move on to a long leash in a quiet outdoor area. For "Sit/Stay," hold for only 1 to 2 seconds, release quickly, and reward. For "Drop/Give," always offer a more interesting trade and never snatch the object.

Where to start training?

The Maltipoo needs to think as much as it needs to move. Enrichment limits the destruction and promotes learning :

  • Objectives : channeling energy, developing flair, learning calmness.
  • Gift : scent games (hidden kibble, track on the floor), lick mat/Kong (can be frozen), targets (“go to the mat”), chewing allowed (coffee wood, soft toys).
  • Simplified Management : rotating toys weekly, barriers to secure, redirecting rather than scolding.
  • Rule : 10 minutes of sniffing are more tiring than 30 minutes of overexcitement.

Frequently asked questions?

Where to start training?

C
B

Start at home, in a quiet room, without distractions. Do very short sessions (1 to 3 minutes), several times a day, rather than one long one.

How to play the “back and forth” game correctly?

C
B

There are two of you. Each person calls once (“Come!”), the dog arrives, you reward it immediately, then the other person calls it in turn. Keep a simple rhythm: call → arrival → reward → 2-3 second pause → repeat.

And what if he doesn't arrive when we call him?

C
B

Don't repeat this ten times. Move a few steps closer, crouch down, make yourself interesting (cheerful voice), show the treat, and shorten the distance. Reward him as soon as he moves towards you. Increase the difficulty very gradually.

Does a Maltipoo live well in an apartment and with children?

C
B

Yes, provided that daily outings, games, and clear rules are offered. Introductions to children and other animals should be done gradually.

When to go outside and how to use the lead rope

C
B

When things are going smoothly at home, take him out to a quiet place (few people, few dogs). Use a 5-10 meter long leash for safety. Follow the same procedure: call him, arrive, reward him. If the environment excites him, increase the value of the treat and shorten the distance.

What equipment and rewards should I choose?

C
B

A lightweight lead, a Y-harness, small soft treats, and your cheerful voice. Keep a "super" treat for tougher situations outside.

How to work on "Sitting / Staying Still" at the beginning?

C
B

Ask for "Sit," say "Stay," count to 1 or 2 seconds, then quickly release ("OK!") and reward. The goal is to succeed often. Increase the time by one second when it's easy, five times in a row.

How do you know when to increase the difficulty?
